The Peace Chair Project

There is no way to peace. Peace is the way.

About the Peace Chair
Peace Chair

The Peace Chair Project was established January 2009. It operates under the Santa Barbara Cultural Development Foundation 501 C-3 to serve the community and beyond with artist created peace chairs.

The idea began with a painting by Catalina, became an artist peace chair upon second grade teacher, Laurie Wright’s desire to have one in her 2nd classroom. Now The Peace Chair Project is a movement to place artist peace chairs in public institutions and make space for peace one chair at a time.

Peace making is an art. The peace chair has a collage of images; the earth from outer space, the solar system and the words, “Peace Chair” and “There is no way to peace. Peace is the way.”

Peace Chairs provide creative space for non-punitive conflict resolution, by placing artist peace chairs in elementary schools, libraries and other related public venues, thereby making available accessible public art that serves to develop a culture of peace and facilitates learning within those organizations, communities and the world.

Elementary school classrooms, libraries and art museums provide most of our requests. Initially, our focus has been on contacting these public organizations in communities of North Santa Barbara County. However, we look, with an ever expanding eye, to find ways to outreach that would, ultimately, provide peace chairs to anyone in the world serving in the public sector that wants one. We are contacting PTA’s and Friends of the Library groups to gain grassroots support, as well as alerting the press and promoting via word of mouth. Our website provides a world wide network to match peace chairs and locations with donors. We hope to create an online culture dedicated to creative conflict resolution by using artist peace chairs as a catalyst for peace.

Curriculum for K-8
A creative approach to curriculum is currently in development by Laurie Wright, elementary school teacher, Janet Rogers, middle school teacher and Catalina McIsaac, artist. This curriculum will be ready early 2010.
